Europe set to Launch the Medicine Shortage Monitoring System

Highlights

  • One major achievement in health policy is the adoption of a ground-breaking tool created by the EMA
  • This innovative technology intends to standardise the monitoring of pharmaceutical shortages throughout Europe

The European Medicine Agency (EMA) is set to launch a new monitoring platform – The European Shortages Monitoring Platform (ESMP) – in February 2025. The platform aims to improve reporting of medicine shortages, enabling faster decision-making and a coordinated approach to manage medicine availability.

It will also streamline data sharing, ensuring a more efficient monitoring and analysis of supply and demand data across multiple European countries.

Data Management

The platform provides real-time data on supply and demand, alerting the EMA of potential unmet needs or national shortages. The ESMP will feature an interface for stakeholders to submit data directly to the EMA and an open-access platform for public access.

The EMA has developed a platform to meet the needs of health stakeholders, involving industry and national regulatory representatives. Thus, the platform aims to serve as a beacon for harmonisation and ensure industry compliance with new reporting requirements.
