Update on the Multi-Country Cholera Outbreak

Highlights

  • 47,234 new cholera cases were reported in 14 countries, representing a 15% drop from the previous month
  • The Eastern Mediterranean Region has the most cases, followed by Africa and Southeast Asia
  • From January to September 2024, 439,724 instances of cholera outbreak were reported worldwide, with 3432 deaths

A global Update on Epidemiology

World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that in September 2024, 47,234 new cholera cases were reported from 14 countries across three WHO regions, a 15% decrease from the previous month. The Eastern Mediterranean Region had the highest number of cases, followed by the African Region and South-East Asia Region. However, 583 cholera-related deaths were registered, an 89% increase from the previous month, with fatalities in the Eastern Mediterranean and African regions.

Global Cholera Cases from January to September 2024

  • 439,724 cholera cases and 3432 deaths reported globally across five WHO regions
  • The Eastern Mediterranean Region had the highest case count (289,933 cases; six countries)
  • The African Region reported 127,283 cases across 17 countries
  • The South-East Asia Region recorded 12,657 cases across five countries
  • The Region of the Americas reported 9,630 cases in one country
  • The Western Pacific Region did not report any cholera outbreak

Cholera cases in African Region

  • 5710 new cholera incidents reported across seven African countries, a 26% increase from the previous month
  • Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Tanzania reported the highest cases
  • 165 cholera-related deaths were reported, with Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Tanzania reporting the highest deaths
  • From January to September 2024, 127,283 cholera outbreak incidents were reported across 17 African countries, with the highest cases in Congo, Ethiopia, and Zambia
  • 2268 deaths were reported, with Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria reporting the highest numbers

Cholera cases in Eastern Mediterranean Region

  • 41,702 new cholera cases across five countries: Afghanistan, Sudan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Somalia
  • 418 cholera-related deaths reported, an 184% increase from the previous month
  • From 1 January to 29 September 2024: 289,933 cholera cases across six countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and the Syrian Arab Republic
  • 986 deaths reported from four countries: Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, and Afghanistan

Europe and Americas

  • European Region reported no new cases or deaths in September 2024
  • From January to September 2024, 221 cases, one death, recorded in France’s Mayotte department
  • Haiti documented 9630 cases and 142 deaths from January to September 2024

South-East Asia Region

  • September 2024 saw a 96% decrease in new cholera outbreaks across Bangladesh and
  • No cholera-related deaths reported
  • From January to September 2024, 12,657 cases reported across five countries: India, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Thailand
  • 34 deaths reported from India

West Pacific Region

  • There were no newly identified cholera outbreak or deaths recorded in the Western Pacific Region between January 1 and September 29, 2024.
