  • Ajman Takes the Lead: World’s First AI Institute for Healthcare to be established

  • AI Institute is all set to open in September and tends to bring together experts in medicine, computer science, data analytics, and metaverse technology

Gulf Medical University in the UAE launched the first Institute of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Technology in Healthcare.

The objectives of this institute are to improve the standard of healthcare services and advance medical professional’s digital literacy. It strives to impart specific expertise about AI and the metaverse to students. Experts anticipate that students will be able to create sophisticated AI and metaverse-based solutions by undertaking this. This could lead to an improvement in how the healthcare system operates.

Dr. Thumbay Moideen, founder and president of Thumbay Group, said, “The AI Institute located at GMU campus in Ajman desire to use the power of AI in medical education and explore new technologies like the metaverse.” He added, “The institute, which is set to open in September, aims to bring together experts in medicine, computer science, data analytics, and metaverse technology.”

The World Is Changing

GMU chancellor Prof. Hossam Hamdy explained the reason for the Institute of AI and Technology in Healthcare’s development. He said, “The delivery of healthcare and medical research, in particular, is going through rapid transformation. As part of our attempts to innovate, we embrace digital transformation and strengthen the digital capabilities of healthcare personnel.”

Prof. Hamdy has announced that the AI Institute in Ajman is bound to provide certificate programs, both short-term and long-term. Students will use these programs as beginnings to eventually pursue Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The degrees tend to go through the required accreditation and approval procedures in compliance with the UAE Ministry of Education standards.

AI Will Not Replace Humans

The GMU Institute of AI and Technology in Healthcare will offer a certificate course to improve diagnostic accuracy. It aims to teach how to use AI tools to make administrative tasks more efficient. Doctors and other healthcare providers can more rapidly and correctly analyse medical document data using these technologies. Thus, the time required for manual data entry can be reduced. The institute also opts to provide ethical and legal courses emphasising data security.

Prof. Hamdy said, “We plan to offer a course on cybersecurity in the healthcare industry in December. This is important since hackers steal much data from hospitals and patients. In this short training, medical workers will learn how to safeguard data and other essential data.” He further added that they tend to provide scholarships to students who want to join the GMU Institute of AI and Technology in Healthcare.

Prof. Hamdy stated that this technology can never replace humans in healthcare services. “But, medical professionals will be taught how to work with machines and use AI technology to improve the performance. This includes doctors, nurses, healthcare managers, and other professionals who opt to learn about the distinctions between virtual reality (VR) and AI.”

The Gulf Medical University offers 24 approved programs to educate people in health-related careers. The university successfully graduated more than 3,500 students from various countries, with students from 96 different nationalities. These students comprise 60% of the healthcare professionals who enter the field each year and 20% of the doctors who graduate in the UAE. The admissions are still going on.

Gulf Medical University achieved a revolutionary milestone by becoming the Middle East’s first to specialise in the use of artificial intelligence to transform the medical education landscape. This enabled the opening of new avenues for research, education, healthcare delivery, innovation, and technological advancements.
